Katin, Peter Roy (1930–2015), pianist, was born on 14 November 1930 at 3 Ramsdale Road, Streatham, London, the younger son of Jerrold Katin (1899–1991), sign-maker and commercial artist, and his wife, Gertrude Kate, née May (1897–1975). A precocious child who started playing the piano at the age of four, but who had no formal lessons on the instrument until he was six, he was the son of an orthodox Jewish father who was ostracized by his family for marrying a Christian.
